With its rich history, jewel-like colours and deep religious significance, the Mashru textile is perhaps one of the oldest and finest textiles in the country. The word ‘Mashru’ comes from the Arabic word ‘sharia’ which means ‘permitted by Islamic law.’ In the olden days, Islamic law forbade the Muslim community from wearing silk. As a solution, weavers designed a new kind of fabric which exuded luxury, while remaining within the confines of the law – a fabric combining the opulence of silk, and the comfort of cotton. With the silk yarns on the outside and the cotton yarns worn against the skin, Mashru was deemed lawful. While it was originally brought to India by the Ottoman Turkish Empire in the sixteenth century, Gujarat became the first weaving centre for Mashru in India. By the turn of the century, it was woven in mainly three regions – Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Deccan India. Although similar in technique, Mashru textiles from each of these regions displayed distinguished patterns – the Gujarati Mashru had stunning bold stripes and dotted patterns, Mashru made in the Deccan region (Andhra Pradesh, Tanjore and the Madras province) consisted of Ikat patterns, and Mashru from Uttar Pradesh were more densely woven and were simpler in pattern and colour. Due to its lustrous appearance, Mashru became a favourite among Indian royalty. Over time, the Mashru designs have become simpler and more contemporary, but their rich allure remains.

CHANDERI YARN GETTING READY TO WEAVE

This fabric can be classified into three types – Chanderi silk cotton, pure silk and Chanderi cotton.

Transparency or sheer texture is a unique feature of Chanderi fabric that differentiates it from other textiles produced across India. The transparency of this fabric is because of the use of single Flature quality of yarn. When glue of a raw yarn is not separated from it, the non-degumming renders a shine and transparency to the finished fabric which produces a Flature yarn.

At Bageeya we create Shimmering eco textured sarees in Zari Silk  and Chanderi Silk . Our Chanderi Detachable saree and dupatta cum cape are everyone’s Favourite.

Linen is one of the oldest fabrics and the earliest evidence of it being manufactured dates back to Egypt, approximately 4,000 years ago. Clothes made from this fabric were worn by the wealthier members of society as it is slightly harder to manufacture linen when compared to the manufacturing of other fibers and fabrics. The Egyptians indulged in a trade with Phoenicians who had their own merchant fleets, through which linen was traded with the people in the Mediterranean areas as well.

SPINNING AT HASTTANTR

Tussar Silk is alternatively referred to as Kosa Silk. It is an exquisite thread generated from yellowish-brown moths that have wide wings. These wings are true wonders as these are embellished with circular markings that behave like mirrors.Tussar silk weaving is a tribal rural art practiced mainly in Jharkhand.

Tussar is also referred to as wild silk as the variety originates from the forest. This variety of silk is collected after cocoons are boiled in hot water or dried under glaring sun when the fiber threads reeled in. Bhagalpur Tussar is known as non-violent Tussar. The waiting period before commencing weaving is about 15 days; within this time, silkworms leave the cocoons unharmed. Then the cocoons are put in boiling water.

BEAUTIFUL COCOON

This type of silk thread has two outstanding qualities. The first one is the good weave finish and the other is brilliant choice of colors that have helped them become suitable to adapt to any traditional weaving style. The weaving from cocoons is mainly done by women of tribal and rural areas.
